On Saturday, January 12th, 53 middle school teams of students from 23 southeastern Wisconsin schools participated in the 2013 Future City Wisconsin Regional Competition held at the MSOE Kern Center. This competition sponsored by STEM Forward and National Engineers Week introduces middle school students to engineering while they create a city of the Future. Teams of students had to create a virtual city using Sim City software, write a 1,000 word essay on a specific topic - this year it was stormwater runoff, write a 500 word city narrative, build a model of their city using recycled materials and give a 5-7 minute presentation to a panel of engineering professionals.
Over 150 STEM Professionals volunteered their time throughout the competition to help select the winner. This year's winner Nani Moku from St. Alphonsus School in Greendale will receive a trip out to Crystal City Virginia on February 15-20, to compete against 35 other Regional Winners from across the United States. We wish the best of luck as they represent Wisconsin.
