Five Outstanding Students Awarded STEM Forward Scholarships

Milwaukee – August 15, 2016 – STEM Forward, metro Milwaukee’s leading STEM education and outreach provider, awarded scholarships to five students for the 2016-17 academic year: Gennisa Gehler, Milwaukee Area Technical College; Reid Jahns, Milwaukee School of Engineering; Rylie Buehrig, UW-Milwaukee; Dawt Tha Hlei Par, UW-Parkside.  The STEM Forward STEM Scholarship and the Robert Brauer Memorial Scholarship are awarded to exceptional students pursuing STEM degrees at colleges and universities in the state of Wisconsin.

The scholarships were presented at STEM Forward’s year end reception hosted by Rockwell Automation on July 13, 2016.  In attendance were STEM Forward’s leadership, supporters, and two of the scholarship award winners, Rylie Buehrig and Dawt Tha Hlei Par.  Both students spoke to their inspiration as well as their future plans.  “I’m the first generation in my family to attend college,” Ms. Par, a recent South Division High School graduate, explained.  “I came to America as a Burmese refugee at the age of 15.  Discovering the differences and disadvantages between healthcare in Burma and the United States helped fuel my passion for nursing.  I want to help people lead healthy lives, no matter where they live.”

Ms. Buehrig cited the lack of gender diversity in STEM as the motivation behind her computer science education.  “There aren’t enough women in I.T.; I want to change that.  I want to be a role model to other young women,”  Ms. Buehrig said. “I aspire to the same level of success and technological advancements made by other female leaders in technology today, and hope that my hard work and outreach will encourage other young women to pursue STEM careers.”

The STEM Forward Scholarship and the Robert Brauer Memorial Scholarship are funded in part by STEM Forward’s Annual Scholarship Golf Outing.  Since 2005, proceeds from the event have supported scholarships for students pursuing STEM degrees at area colleges and also support local K-12 STEM education activities.  This year’s five scholarships total $10,000.

STEM Forward’s 11th Annual Scholarship Golf Outing will be held at Morningstar Golf Club on August 18, 2016.  Business leaders from prominent Milwaukee companies will be on hand to support STEM education and enjoy a day of golf and networking.  Learn more about the event and sponsorship by visiting www.stemforward.org.
